Crathco in Alamo

Crathco refrigeration in Alamo.

When a Crathco auger quits turning, the trouble usually starts at the magnetic-drive coupling. The motor spins under the bowl, but the magnet loses its grip on the auger and product stops moving. On the D-series and Mini-Pro units we see in Alamo, a cracked drive magnet, a seized auger bushing, or dried syrup binding the shaft will all stall the paddle while the motor keeps running. We open the unit, check the magnet gap, and find out whether the fault is the drive or the auger before we quote anything.

Alamo runs a small number of upscale kitchens, mostly the plaza spots off Danville Boulevard, so a dead dispenser is felt fast once the lunch crowd shows up. Commercial density here is low, which means most owners do not keep a spare bowl on the shelf. We carry common Crathco couplings, augers, and seals on the van so a single visit usually closes the job.

Bay Area Refrigeration Service is an independent shop run by Andrew Kuznetsov out of San Ramon. We are EPA 608 certified and licensed under CSLB #1136642. The diagnostic is $75 and we waive it when you approve the repair. You get a written quote before any wrench turns.

Common repairs we do

What we close on the truck.

  • Auger stops turning while the motor runs. This is the magnetic-drive coupling giving up. The drive magnet under the bowl no longer pulls the auger magnet, so the paddle sits still and product will not circulate. We inspect the drive magnet for cracks, check the auger bushing for wear, and clear any hardened syrup on the shaft. Worn couplings get replaced with the matching Crathco part, and we test the pull before we button it up.
  • Bowl cools slow or freezes too hard. Crathco cold-plate and FROZEN units hold a tight temperature band. When product pours out warm or turns to a solid brick, we test the sealed system. Many of these run R290, so we check the charge, the compressor, and the thermostat or control board. We confirm the fault with gauges instead of guessing.
  • Syrup weeping under the bowl. A leak at the base of the bowl points to a tired shaft seal or a flat gasket. Left alone it drips onto the deck and can reach the drive motor. We pull the bowl, replace the seal and O-rings with fresh Crathco parts, and reseat everything so the front of house stays dry.

FAQ

Crathco in Alamo questions, answered.

  • Do you actually drive out to Alamo, or only stay near San Ramon?
We cover Alamo on a regular basis. The run up through Danville is short, and we also work Lafayette and Walnut Creek, so a stop off Danville Boulevard fits our route without a long wait.
  • What does the visit cost before any repairs?
The diagnostic is $75. If you approve the work, we take that $75 off the repair. You see a written quote first, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
  • Can you fix a Crathco bubbler that sprays weak?
Yes. Weak spray usually traces to the pump, the spray tube, or a clogged nozzle rather than the refrigeration side. We clean or replace the pump parts and set the flow back to where the display looks full.
